What Switch Do You Need?

DPDT, SPST, DPST, rocker, toggle, all these names can be confusing. So what switch do you actually need?

The choice between rocker and toggle switches is mainly aesthetic however there are a few pros and cons to think about. A rocker switch typically has a larger footprint than a toggle switch and takes up more room on your dash. This could be a pro or a con depending on what your goals are. The larger switch will take up more space but it’s also easier to find. Generally speaking, it’s easier to find waterproof toggle switches but it’s also easier to label a rocker switch. Rocker switches are easier to label and sometimes come with customizable icons for quick identification, but toggle switches are usually more durable. In the end, choosing between the two options comes down to your goals and your project.

But what about all of those 4 letter acronyms?

SPST (Single Pole Single Throw) - This is the most basic on/off switch. One wire in and one wire out. This is the kind of switch you would use for lights, fans, and other things that only need a single power input.

SPDT (Single Pole Dual Throw) - One power wire in, two power wires out but only one wire out can be hot at any given time. You might see these as a three-position momentary switch used to control a winch or a motor. Push the switch up to extend and back to retract.

DPST (Dual Pole Single Throw) - Two power wires in, two power wires out, and two completely separate circuits. This switch is basically two SPST switches stuck together and controlled by one button.

DPDT (Dual Pole Dual Throw) - You guessed it, this switch is just two SPDT switches stuck together and controlled by the same button.
